Fall HVAC Checklist: Get Your Heat Pump Ready for Winter

Cooler nights are finally rolling into southeastern North Carolina, and that first chilly morning is exactly when most homeowners discover their heat isn't working. After a long, humid summer of running nonstop, your heat pump or furnace has earned some attention before it switches jobs for the season. Here's a simple fall checklist from our team at Butler's HVAC to help you avoid a cold-night surprise.

Start with a fresh filter. A summer's worth of dust, pollen and pet hair chokes airflow and makes your system work harder than it should. A clean filter is the cheapest energy savings you'll ever buy, and it protects the blower and coil behind it. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, it's time.

Test your heat before you need it. Pick a mild afternoon, switch the thermostat to heat, and let it run for ten or fifteen minutes. A slight burning smell for the first few minutes is normal dust burning off, but grinding noises, repeated clicking, or air that never warms up are signs to give us a call while it's still shorts weather.

Clear around the outdoor unit. Hurricane season and fall leaf drop go hand in hand around here. Pull vines, leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit and keep at least two feet of clearance so your heat pump can breathe. While you're out there, make sure nothing is resting against the fan and the unit is sitting level.

Don't forget the crawlspace. Coastal humidity doesn't quit just because summer does. Damp crawlspaces breed mold, rust out ductwork, and make your whole system less efficient. If your floors feel cold and clammy or you've noticed musty smells, fall is a great time to ask about moisture barriers and crawlspace encapsulation.
